Breeder Profile: Darrel Apps

Darrel Apps

Darrel Apps got his desire for breeding daylilies when he worked for the University of Kentucky and saw how well the plants did in the hot summers of Lexington. He made his first cross in 1969, and has been breeding daylilies ever since (going on 40 years!). Much of Dr. Apps' work has been developing daylilies that thrive in Northern climates, improving on those Southern cultivars that only bloom a few weeks here in West Michigan (zone 5).

Through Centerton Nursery in Bridgeton, New Jersey, Dr. Apps and Danny Blew (of Centerton) developed the trademark Happy Ever Appster® Daylilies. These daylilies exhibit at least three blooming cycles (rebloomers). You'll recognize some of the members of the group as 'Apricot Sparkles' PP13223, 'Happy Returns', 'Just Plum Happy' PP14841, 'Rosy Returns', 'Stephanie Returns' PP18538, and 'Red Hot Returns' PP13499.
