Trials Assistant/R&D Grower

Walters Gardens Inc., located in Zeeland, MI, is a leading grower of perennial plants since 1946. We take great pride in the superior quality of our young plants and field grown products, diverse product selection, customer-focused staff, our extensive hybridizing program, and the ability to offer the best new introductions from around the world. We are currently looking to fill a position to assist with the growing of plants in our R&D Department, as well as assist with data collection and trials in our Trials Department.

Essential Duties in the R&D Department include:

  • Water management with weekend duty required.
  • Assist with fertility management, including soil and water testing.
  • Assist with scouting for pests and diseases, and notify the Plant Health Department of any issues.
  • Apply chemicals as needed in the quarantine area, prior to plants entering the R&D greenhouses.

Essential Duties in the Trials Department include:

  • Transplant plant material into trays or larger containers for evaluation purposes.
  • Help to maintain inventory of trial plants.
  • Assist with preparation of new trials.
  • Utilize trialing software to collect data and photography of trials.
  • Apply chemicals as needed for trialing purposes.

Qualified Applicants must have:

  • Applicable bachelor’s degree, 3-5 years related agriculture experience
  • Strong communication skills
  • Positive initiative and self-motivation
  • Ability to multi-task and manage multiple projects independently


Greenhouse Group Leader

We are looking for Group Leaders for our Greenhouse Processing Department. Group leaders oversee employees and maintain quality for the group. This position requires confidence managing multiple tasks on a daily basis and making sure processes are done as efficiently as possible.

Essential Duties Include:

Personal Responsibilities:

  • Maintaining plant supply for those working on production line or stations
  • Supervising workers processing plant materials in small groups, production lines, or at work stations
  • Directing work flow when necessary
  • Assisting workers in solving problems and maintaining plant quality
  • Being comfortable addressing complaints and resolving problems between employees or in regards to work quality
  • Working alongside production workers when necessary
  • Using a handheld scanner to locate and track products
  • Motivating workers to achieve daily and weekly production goals

Team Responsibilities

  • Work with other group leaders to meet production goals and maintain quality standards
  • Be able to communicate issues with department managers
  • Maintain positive and engaging work culture
  • Complete other duties as assigned

Greenhouse Intern

We have an opportunity for a Greenhouse Intern from May – August of 2019. As an intern for Walters Gardens, you will work primarily in the growing and plant health departments, but you will also experience many other parts of the business. You’ll learn about and participate in the activities we do to grow high quality plants. We’ll expect you to actively collaborate with the team, so you can help us produce plants while meeting our extremely high standards for efficiently, safety, and economy. Our goal is to help you learn a lot and have a lot of fun doing it.

Essential duties include:

Personal Responsibilities

  • Learn process for tracking trials.
  • Develop a trial project to track with help from your supervisor. This could include PGR, irrigation, fertility, propagations, etc.
  • Help the Research and Development department with hybridizing of various plants.
  • Learn the various recommended moisture levels and assist growers with maintaining these moisture levels.
  • Assist growers with operating, maintaining, and scheduling all sprinkler and irrigation booms.
  • Aid Assistant Growers with collecting soil and tissue samples and running tests to determine pH and EC of soils
  • Learn to schedule and apply weekly fertilizer, based on soil test results collected.
  • Assist with mixing fertilizer and ensuring the proper feed is being applied through irrigation systems.
  • Help the plant health department scout for diseases and insects in perennials.
  • Learn and assist with methods of controlling insects and diseases through chemical or biological means.
  • Understand the importance of Plant Growth Regulators in production and help with tracking applications.
  • Help with identifying and sampling viruses that are commonly found in perennials.
  • Experience tissue culture lab and assist in the production of this material.
  • Assist employees with data collection and assessment paperwork.

Team Responsibilities:

  • Communicate any problems or concerns to growing department or plant health department managers immediately.
  • Help maintain a culture which respects people and promotes team success.
  • Be involved with team meetings that address various topics.
  • Complete other duties as assigned.

Qualified applicants must have demonstrated ability of:

  • Pursuing a degree in Horticulture or a related field
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office
  • Able to communicate and interact with co-workers
  • Capable of effectively handling multiple tasks
  • Willing to work flexible hours

Electrician

We are currently looking for an Electrician to maintain and support the electrical systems at our Zeeland facilities.

Essential duties include:

  • Maintain the primary and essential power systems at Walters Gardens
  • Monitor electrical loads in the facility to maintain balanced and reliable electricity to the entire facility
  • Monitor and work to improve power factor percentages in the facility
  • Work with other managers in the facility to manage “max demand” to insure we are operating as efficiently as possible
  • Perform assigned electrical / mechanical work
  • Assist with troubleshooting, repairs, and maintenance of electrical / mechanical equipment
  • Respond to and utilize communication devices
  • Assist with the planning and execution of construction projects and facility upgrades
  • Provide technical (mechanical, electrical, pneumatic/hydraulic) expertise to the company to assist in implementing the best solutions to operational challenges

Qualified applicants must have:

  • Current State of Michigan journeyman or masters electrical license and not less than 10 years’ experience managing commercial and industrial applications
  • Knowledge in the proper shutdown of high voltage primary circuits and transformers during periods of utility single phasing, fluctuating voltage, accidental damage, or for safety purposes
  • Familiarity with monitoring secondary loads and managing them for proper balance across phases
  • Strong communication skills
  • Positive initiative and self-motivation
  • Ability to multi-task and manage multiple projects independently
  • Ability to be on call and respond to emergencies 24/7
