Field Tech

We are currently looking for a Field Tech to support the field operations by planning, monitoring, and managing the optimum viability and growth of Walters Gardens field crops.

Essential duties include:

  • Use Integrated Pest Management (IPM) techniques for monitoring plant health and applying appropriate remedies.
  • Apply pesticides and perform fumigation applications
  • Maintain and update equipment and purchase chemicals needed to perform IPM and chemical application work.
  • Perform herbicide and fertilizer R & D trials
  • Maintain all field pesticide records in accordance with federal and state laws
  • Purchase and maintain inventory of pesticides and biological controls for field applications in accordance with federal and state laws
  • Facilitate cleanliness and organization of field pesticide storage room and fill sites
  • Post appropriate signage regarding chemical applications and reentry times
  • Organize and keep accurate records of the timely sampling of field soils and facilitate application of nutrients and soil amendments to optimize plant growth
  • Facilitate the disposal of recycling of hazardous waste from pesticide containers
  • Miscellaneous duties as assigned by supervisor

Qualified applicants must have:

  • Applicable bachelor's degree, 5-7 years related agriculture experience
  • Private pesticide applicator license
  • Strong communication skills
  • Positive initiative and self-motivation
  • Ability to multi-task and manage multiple projects independently

Greenhouse Intern

We have an opportunity for a Greenhouse Intern from May – August of 2018.  As an intern for Walters Gardens, you will work primarily in the growing and plant health departments, but you will also experience many other parts of the business. You’ll learn about and participate in the activities we do to grow high quality plants. We’ll expect you to actively collaborate with the team, so you can help us produce plants while meeting our extremely high standards for efficiently, safety, and economy. Our goal is to help you learn a lot and have a lot of fun doing it.

Essential duties include:

Personal Responsibilities

  • Learn process for tracking trials
  • Develop a trial project to track with help from your supervisor. This could include PGR, irrigation, fertility, propagations, etc.
  • Learn the various recommended moisture levels and assist growing staff with maintaining these moisture levels plants
  • Assist growing staff with operating, maintaining, and scheduling all sprinkler and irrigation booms
  • Aid Assistant Growers with collecting soil and tissue samples and running tests to determine pH and EC of soils
  • Learn to schedule and apply weekly fertilizer, based on soil test results collected
  • Learn and understand the various fertilizer blends and adjust irrigation per the nutritional needs of the plants
  • Assist with mixing fertilizer and ensuring the proper feed is being applied through irrigation systems
  • Help the plant health department scout for diseases and insects in perennials
  • Learn and assist with methods of controlling insects and diseases through chemical or biological means
  • Understand the importance of Plant Growth Regulators in production and help with tracking applications
  • Help with identifying and sampling viruses that are commonly found in perennials
  • Assist with herbicide and sanitation applications around the facility as needed
  • Assist staffing with data collection and assessment paperwork

Team Responsibilities

  • Communicate any problems or concerns to growing department or plant health department managers immediately
  • Help maintain a culture which respects people and promotes team success
  • Be involved with team meetings that address various topics
  • Complete other duties as assigned

Qualified applicants must have demonstrated ability of:

  • Pursuing a degree in Horticulture or a related field
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office
  • Able to communicate and interact with co-workers
  • Capable of effectively handling multiple tasks

    Regional Product Manager

    We are currently looking for a Regional Product Manager to promote Walters Gardens’ product to industry audiences and cultivate relationships with new and existing customers.

    Essential duties include:

    • Oversee the development of customer relationships and sales growth primarily in the Northeast Region of the US
    • Service and support customers through various communication methods
    • Travel to customers to promote Walters Gardens product and present new ideas, concepts and programs
    • Attend industry trade shows and events
    • Establish sales goals and assist with developing production goals
    • Work with internal Walters Gardens’ departments on product availability and salability
    • Support established sales channels

    Customer Care Manager

    We are currently looking for a Customer Care Manager to oversee the staff and functions of our Customer Care department.

    Essential duties include:

    • Analyze and organize order entry and all other office procedures.
    • Manage Customer Care team
    • Monitor and maximize productivity and efficiency of CCR's
    • Resolve customer concerns
    • Promote staff development and positive department morale
    • Implement and monitor calling campaigns
    • Maintain contact with customers and outside vendors as necessary.
    • Manage all Customer Pick Up Orders Weekly.

    Electrician

    We are currently looking for an Electrician to maintain and support the electrical systems at our Zeeland facilities.

    Essential duties include:

    • Maintain the primary and essential power systems at Walters Gardens
    • Monitor electrical loads in the facility to maintain balanced and reliable electricity to the entire facility
    • Monitor and work to improve power factor percentages in the facility
    • Work with other managers in the facility to manage “max demand” to insure we are operating as efficiently as possible
    • Perform assigned electrical / mechanical work
    • Assist with troubleshooting, repairs, and maintenance of electrical / mechanical equipment
    • Respond to and utilize communication devices
    • Assist with the planning and execution of construction projects and facility upgrades
    • Provide technical (mechanical, electrical, pneumatic/hydraulic) expertise to the company to assist in implementing the best solutions to operational challenges

    Qualified applicants must have:

    • Current State of Michigan journeyman or masters electrical license and not less than 10 years’ experience managing commercial and industrial applications
    • Knowledge in the proper shutdown of high voltage primary circuits and transformers during periods of utility single phasing, fluctuating voltage, accidental damage, or for safety purposes
    • Familiarity with monitoring secondary loads and managing them for proper balance across phases
    • Strong communication skills
    • Positive initiative and self-motivation
    • Ability to multi-task and manage multiple projects independently
    • Ability to be on call and respond to emergencies 24/7
